Mr. O’Brien joined HHBJ as an Associate after graduating from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 2018. Before graduating law school, he worked for HHBJ as a law clerk during the Summer of 2017. He has assisted in representing numerous clients in employment discrimination, non-compete agreement, automotive supply chain, trade secret, and contractual disputes.

Experience

During his time with HHBJ, Mr. O’Brien has worked on cases during all stages of litigation in state and federal courts as well in alternative dispute resolution. He has drafted numerous pre and post-trial pleadings such as motions to transfer venue and motions to dismiss.

Before joining HHBJ, Mr. O’Brien interned for Federal District Judge Gerald E. Rosen in the Eastern District of Michigan during the Summer of 2016. During his time in Judge Rosen’s chambers, he analyzed complex jurisdictional issues and assisted with ERISA and employment discrimination cases. Before graduating law school, Mr. O’Brien also worked with Whirlpool Corporation’s legal team in Benton Harbor, Michigan. During his time with Whirlpool, he helped navigate Whirlpool through employment discrimination and contract disputes as well as help update Whirlpool’s non-compete and confidentiality agreements for new and promoted employees.

Throughout his undergraduate and law school career, Mr. O’Brien worked for and managed a research project at the University of Michigan Law School. During his six years with The Probate Project, he led a team of undergraduate and law school researchers to determine the effects of each states’ legal regimes, tax rules, and economic conditions on testamentary choices. During his three years of law school, Mr. O’Brien commuted on the weekends to Ann Arbor to help create and finish one of the country’s largest collection of testamentary rules and documents. During his senior year at the University of Michigan, Mr. O’Brien interned for Speaker Jase Bolger in the Office of the Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives in 2014 where he was one of the first interns to work on and speak on the House floor during session. He graduated from Detroit Catholic Central in 2010.
